For this wool sewing project you will need:

3 yards of fleece (1 yard of fleece and 2 yards of blanket if you want a different color hood/pocket)*

Rotary knives, rulers, transfer parts

Step 1 - no pattern

If you're making a hooded fleece blanket from a single piece of fabric, you'll need to smooth the edges (to evenly straighten them) after cutting the pattern. If using two pieces of fabric, smooth the edges of the fabrics that make up the main part of the blanket.

Get the main blanket. We want the length of the blanket to be 56"-58" equal to the width of the fabric.

Mark the center on one side of the raw edge. This is easy to do, just fold it in half and pin it. The right side should be facing up.

Line up the center seam with the needle/mark you just made. Attach the hood to the right side of the blanket. Sew a 0.5" seam allowance.

Now is the time to sew the hand warmers on each side.

Attach the hand warmer to the left corner of the blanket, with the right sides together. Same side as the hood. Sew a 0.5" seam allowance.

Repeat the process with the right side of the blanket. On the other hand, sew the warmer with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. NOTE: It doesn't matter if the hand warmer and hood are completely overlapping, just make sure the hood is under the hand warmer.

The pocket should be placed about 1/3 down - the top should be facing the same direction as the hood and placed 6 inches from the edge.

Nail and sew along the edges using a zigzag stitch.

Best Fabrics for Blanket Hoodie

This pattern consists of 2 layers including a (faux) Sherpa lining and a fleece outer layer. Most are made of polyester, although there is some fluff, there are different types of fleece that can be used to make blanket hoodies, from plush fleece (my favorite for this post) to fleece. There should be a little stretch (10% is fine). Sherpa is also called wool, but in this article I will simply refer to it as Sherpa and the fabric as wool.

You can of course substitute any comfortable fabric you like, but my favorite tip for finding quality fabric is to use a commercial lamb/wool blanket for the fabric length.

For the blanket hoodies I made, I used these Sherpa and wool blankets from Amazon. I bought the king size (108" x 90") and it has enough fabric to sew a loose adult blanket hoodie. For the kids size blanket hoodie pattern offers the same quilt but big enough fabric (90 x 90 inches) and some scrap. You can see in the image below how the adult and kids patterns fit into the quilt I linked above.

No matter what premade quilt you use, just double-check that the yardage is adequate and consider any areas where the edges are stitched together.

Using a pre-made blanket is usually cheaper than buying individual fabrics at a fabric store (if you're using a set-up fabric, keep an eye out for specials!).
